Making Safety Initiatives A Priority
Walk Home Cocky - One of the flagship safety initiatives run by student government. I proudly support and will continue to support this program which provides students, staff, and anyone studying late in Thomas Cooper Library the choice to be walked to their car, dorm, or parking garage by guides. This program refuses to allow students who wish to study and work late to feel unsafe walking around campus in the dark. As a campus integrated with the city of Columbia safety initiatives like these ensure our students safety and peace of mind.
Carolina Cab - Taking the issue of safety one step further, this lesser known student government initiative provides FREE rides home for students in five points to anywhere within a five mile radius (which includes all apartment complexes). This service is available Thursday through Saturday and ensures that students who choose to enjoy Five Points on the weekends have a safe ride home. Student safety is at the core of this initiative and by making it free it allows all students the ability to take advantage of this service. Programs such as this are available to USC students due to special contracts signed with the Carolina Cab provider. This type of deal allows students free rides and promotes safety. With the proper advertising campaign I hope to see ridership continue to grow and USC students continue to make the decision that is both safe and fiscally responsible.
