Making Every Dollar Count
When someone refers to the Student Government budget, many people don't realize that it has nothing to do with organization funding. What's distributed to student orgs is actually a separate fund of about $180,000 made up entirely of student activity fees. The student government budget is made up of all the funds by which student government uses to operate (including things like printing and supplies), to funding for annual events, to programs and investments in new initiatives. As treasurer I would ask the tough questions and evaluate each expenditure. Making sure SG spends it's money wisely allows for us to have more funds available to invest in new programs that help our students.
Supporting Key Initiatives
Over the years student government has created and established signature programs that have immensely benefited the student body. Some of these, like Carolina Closet, and the Gamecock Food Pantry have taken on a life of their own and have their own directors and funding from SG. Successful programs like these fall under the purview of the student body treasurer in a supervisory role. In that capacity, I would help those directors grow and develop their respective programs. Connecting those directors with the resources of an expanded Communication team will not doubt improve the outreach of the programs.
Investing in New Programs
One of the most vital parts of being treasurer is controlling how and how many new programs get funded. Candidates can promise you the moon during the campaign, but if it's not fiscally possible or responsible I promise you that it will not come to fruition. Under my direction student government will only be investing in programs that get the most bang for their buck. In other words, we needs programs and services that the student body needs, that actually work and are proven to do so, and that won't cost us an exorbitant amount of money. The student body has entrusted us with managing a budget and I can assure everyone that no funds will be wasted needlessly under my direction.
